Miles STEM Magnet

Mission Statement

The Miles school community fosters the innate capacities of each student, empowering them to become lifelong learners and leaders.

Preparing students for the 21st century requires a math/science curriculum based on authentic tasks. Miles Ave. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet Center provides an environment which allows students to use inquiry to construct meaning. Students work toward the production of learning samples or performances to demonstrate their understanding of the content.  Technology is used as a vehicle for cooperative learning, science and math communication opportunities and real-life problem solving.

Vision Statement:

The school vision is academic rigor in a thinking curriculum via the gradual release of responsibility. Our vision is that every student that leaves Miles STEM Magnet Center is equipped for success and will ultimately graduate with a university degree and be an integral part of society.

Statement of Purpose:

Miles Magnet Center enriches the Los Angeles Unified School District's core curriculum and instructional programs by engaging students in inquiry-based activities that develop conceptual learning throughout the curriculum, with an emphasis on math and science; integrating technology as a tool for acquiring and demonstrating knowledge.

Differentiated Objectives of the Program

Mathematics/Technology

•Students will learn to utilize a variety of math manipulatives to solve math problems.

•Students will use a variety of computer programs to produce spreadsheets, computer generated graphics, graphs and charts.

•Students will use the computer and the local area network and wide area network to interact with other students.

•Students will have the opportunity to select from a variety of math manipulatives and technology as they explore mathematical ideas. These include math videos, math software programs, and computer draw programs.

•Students will use technology to organize, record and present their mathematical conclusions.  They will use student-created videos and multimedia computer programs for peer/self assessment.

Science/Technology

•Students will have access to a variety of technology to explore scientific principles.

•Students will construct important ideas of science through inquiry and investigation, using computers and the Internet.

•Students will search for scientific solutions by working together in collaborative groups, using a variety of instructional materials, including computers and multimedia software to facilitate active learning and construction of new knowledge.

•Students will pursue investigations that are relevant and presented in a meaningful context. Investigations will be facilitated by the use of resources available through the Internet.

•Students will use higher level thinking skills as they act as scientific investigators of the world around them.

Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom

Miles STEM Magnet  fifth graders are working on a Project Based Learning unit that requires them to choose between the Moon and Mars for a new frontier to  colonize. So a trip to the Griffith Observatory to enhance their study of the planets made perfect sense.

ST Math - Math through technology

Meet JiJi! Each student in grades 1 - 5 works with JiJi in ST Math twice a week to help them reach math proficiency. It is closely aligned to state and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and integrates with core instruction. ST Math games use interactive, graphically-rich animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Students can even access ST Math on devices at home enabling anywhere anytime learning.

Testing pH levels

Students measuring pH levels of liquids to see if they are acidic, base, or nuetral, identifying if it is consumable, non consumable, biodegradable or a conservative pollutant for our environment.

Our students programming a "Mice" and "Robot" to do special commands.

The New Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set is designed to help kids start learning imports skills like coding, critical thinking, problem solving, and more.
